Inhibition of aldose reductase by herbs extracts and natural substances and their role in prevention of cataracts Plantas Medicinales
Guzmán,Ángel; Guerrero,Ricardo O.
Cataractogenesis is a common complication that occurs in diabetes mellitus. Aldose reductase is a lens enzyme probably involved in the development of this eye problem. The purpose of this investigation was to screen plant extracts for aldose reductase inhibitors (ARI) and to investigate their possible influence in diabetic cataractogenesis prevention. 13 plants and 3 natural products were randomly selected for our experiment. The 19 extracts originated from plant material which was extracted with ethanol, water and DCM, and assessed for inhibitors of aldose reductase. This enzyme was isolated from bovine lenses homogenates. The enzyme was incubated in a reaction mixture containing 50 mM Na-phosphate buffer (pH 6.2), NADPH, 400 mM LiSO4 and...

Cruz-Estrada,Angel; Gamboa-Angulo,Marcela; Borges-Argáez,Rocío; Ruiz-Sánchez,Esaú.
Background: The whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) is a widely distributed and highly harmful plant pest species. The management of B. tabaci has been typically carried out by chemical pesticides. In the last decade however, there has been an increasing interest in natural products, particularly those of plant origin, to control this pest species. In the present work, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of native plants from the flora of the Yucatán peninsula (Acalypha gaumeri, Annona squamosa, Carlowrightia myriantha, Petiveria alliaceae and Trichilia arborea) and the introduced plant Azadirachta indica were collected and evaluated for insecticidal activity against eggs and nymphs Bemisia tabaci. Results: Most of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts showed high...

Jadon,Kuldeep Singh; Shah,Rakesh; Gour,Hari Narayan; Sharma,Pankaj.
Abstract Sweet or bell pepper is a member of the Solanaceae family and is regarded as one of the most popular and nutritious vegetable. Blight, in the form of leaf and fruit blight, has been observed to infect bell pepper crops cultivated at the horticulture farm in Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur, India. Based on disease severity, we attempted to curb this newly emerged problem using different fungicides, plant extracts, bio-control agents, and commercial botanicals against the fungus in laboratory and pot experiments. Bio-control agent Trichoderma viride and plant growth promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolate Neist-2 were found to be quite effective against bell pepper blight. All evaluated fungicides, botanicals, commercial botanicals, and...

Afzal,Hira; Ahmed,Sohail; Khan,Rashad Rasool; Sufian,Muhammad; Arshad,Muhammad; Qasim,Muhammad.
ABSTRACT The house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), is a major pest of all aspects of life, like the domestic, medical and veterinary and causal agent of several pathogenic diseases. The present study was conducted to evaluate the potential of different insecticide-free baits against house fly by incorporating flower methanol extract of Helianthus annuus (sunflower) and Tegetes erecta (marigold) at 10%, 20% and 30% bait formulation of corn syrup, dried milk and water. However, imidacloprid and thiacloprid (each at 5% concentration) were also included in the study for comparison. Results showed that insecticide baits were superior in causing mortality of adult house fly but dependent upon syrup. Overall, 20% baits of both extracts caused more...

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance, body composition, and physiological state of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) fingerlings fed diets containing different levels of green tea (Camellia sinensis) extract (GTE). A completely randomized design was used with five treatments, different levels of GTE (0.00, 0.05, 0.30, 0.55, and 0.80 g kg-1) and three replicates. The diets were offered to fingerlings twice a day, for 90 days. The increase of dietary GTE levels promoted a positive quadratic effect on body lipids, hepatic lipids, retention of body lipids, glucose, and total triglycerides, and the minimum values of these variables were estimated with 0.61, 0.54, 0.73, 0.60, and 0.30g kg-1 GTE in the diet, respectively. There was a...
